Star Wars

"Da-da-da Daaaa..... Da". Now that I have the theme song in your head, let's talk about this crazy cake! Months ago, in a galaxy far, far away there was a young 6 year old who dreamed of having a Star Wars birthday party. Apparently this dream was had by all his friends, as each have had their own Star Wars party. As our party date grew closer, for fear that all the kids might be getting bored of "The Force", I made every attempt to steer my little Jedi's theme in a different direction. As you can see, the "good side" won.
For this cake, I did a lot of research to get the details just perfect,... as I knew my son would be checking for accuracy. : ) Here we go! The Death Star is made by covering a styrofoam ball with fondant details. The superlaser is a simple green straw, cut with tiny scissors at one end. Then there's the Tie Fighters and X-Wing Fighters. These took a lot of time to create. Everything on them is fondant, with a little red and black food coloring for some of the details.
Before I started designing, my son showed me a picture for inspiration of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader fighting their last battle. He said they were a must on the cake. Fortunately a friend had the action figures, but were missing the light sabers,.... so those were made from fondant. I used an Exacto knife to cut the Star Wars logo from fondant, and then painted it with edible silver dust to make it shine. Fondant light sabers encircled the bottom tier in a criss-cross pattern. On the cake board I used icing to write "May The Force Be With You". On the opposite side is my son's name, Michael, iced over a fondant Roman Numeral number 7.
For a final surprise, I placed a sound chip under the back of Obi-Wan's cloak, that when pressed, plays the Star Wars theme song. How cool is that?! With everything said and done, and 20.5 hours of standing at the kitchen island had passed, with just 45 minutes of sleep half way through,.... my little man ended up with what he said "is the BEST cake EVER!" Happy Birthday young Jedi!...............
That's a wrap!
